Why are leftists so quick to yell, "Racism!" about anyone and anything with which they disagree?

One particularly obtuse leftist just called me a "racist" in response to a question I asked regarding the death of Paul Harvey. Is it hardwired into the brains of the left that everyone who doen't follow them in lockstep is somehow racist?
