Pc to laptop connection?

I have win xp on my pc as well laptop, and have directlly connected them with a crossover cable (cat 5) and have set the two IP address's manually as advised, the pc and laptop network connection says connected but no packets are shown as received in pc as well laptop, but both are sending packets. can anyone suggest how can share my files from pc to laptop in the above setup
