Gran Torino Question: Are ethnic jokes considered mainstream now?

Are ethnic jokes becoming socially acceptable again? I don't mind any type of humor as long as it's light-hearted in intention, but I was fairly certain people got wildly offended at this kind of thing. Since Gran Torino is littered with ethno-racial epithets & jokes, I ask this question.
