Do Chimpanzee fathers ever abandon their young like human fathers do..?

i was watching a discovery channel programme about chimpanzees. there was a pregnant female chimpanzee and the baby's father was very close to her and very protective of her and after the baby chimp was born. he brought her food, and played with the baby, etc.. why don't human fathers feel as close to or bond to their children? just wondering. why do they just leave and never come back? how could they do that?
